Shears Hustle & Blow is a hair salon geared toward NYU’s college kids located off a small alley in New York City’s Soho. The space is the result of a successful collaboration between architect and graphic designer. The client paired Elizabeth Roberts with a young NYC-based graffiti art duo of world-wide recognition. The architecture was conceived with logos, surface treatments and collateral materials in mind. The result is an exciting and young space and a long-lasting professional relationship.
Five styling stations were placed along the wall facing vintage speakers that function to broadcast music while several of the speakers were retrofitted to create drawers for stylists’ storage needs. Mirrors were custom silvered with custom graphics and slogans. Custom light-fixtures were created for the space using found materials that were spray-painted and wired to create a glistening light source at the register.
A meaningful collaboration between architect and artist gives way to a hip, unpretentious, and vibrantly creative hair salon that caters to local, young clientele.
