The Clinton Hill Residence is an Italianate brownstone located in Brooklyn, NY. The building was constructed in 1866. Today the 5 story building is broken into a 2-family residence – with a 2 bedroom rental unit at the garden level and a 6 bedroom single-family residence occupying the top 4 floors.

Before the renovation the house was in a state of disrepair and had been converted into a 6-kitchen SRO. The only remaining historic detail was the original wood staircase, several marble mantles, parquet oak floors and some of the original plaster ceiling molding. During the renovation the house was completely transformed with 4.5 new bathrooms and 2 new kitchens in locations where bathrooms and kitchens did not previously exist. The mechanicals of the building were replaced and the house now has a high-efficiency gas boiler supplying radiator heat throughout the house.

The Cellar Level contains the mechanicals for the building, a cedar-lined closet, a wine cellar and a home gym. The Garden Level contains a 2-bedroom rental apartment and second entry for the main house. The structural bearing wall at the Parlor that separated the stair from the living room was removed to create an open living / dining / kitchen. Windows at the garden side of the house were extended to the floor to create 2 doors to a new deck and stair to the garden. The existing chimney in the dining room was adjusted to create a standing height firebox that houses a Tuscan Grill for cooking in the winter. The remaining 3 upper levels were extensively remodeled to create a master suite on the 2nd floor with separate bathing area behind the bedroom, a home office, guest apartment and laundry on the 3rd floor and 2 bedrooms and TV area under a large skylight at the top level. The original oak floors were retained and repaired as required then dyed a dark chocolate brown to achieve a more contemporary palate.
